The Last Rhinos: A New Hope

On 24th August 2025, National Geographic premiers The Last Rhinos: A New Hope, now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

This moving film, by award-winning photographer Ami Vitale, follows the extraordinary journey of Najin and Fatu—the last two northern white rhinos on Earth—and the remarkable people fighting for their future. Filmed here at Ol Pejeta, it captures the urgency, the setbacks, and the triumphs of creating the world’s first surrogate rhino pregnancy.

The death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, became the catalyst for one of the most daring conservation efforts ever attempted. At Ol Pejeta, together with the BioRescue project, Safari Park Dvůr Králové, and the Kenya Wildlife Service, our team refuses to let extinction be the end of this story.

This groundbreaking film explores the intimate bonds between Najin, Fatu, and their caretakers, the cutting-edge science behind the BioRescue project, and the creation of embryos that offer a lifeline for the species. It also recounts the devastating loss of surrogate rhino Curra, and the heartbreaking yet astonishing discovery that she was pregnant. From this tragedy, hope emerges, and the mission continues.

Progress in science is rarely straightforward. Since Sudan’s passing, every egg retrieved, every embryo created, and every attempt made has been a vital step forward. The first surrogate pregnancy attempt did not succeed, but the team’s resolve has only grown stronger—learning, adapting, and continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible.
