Saying Goodbye to Bahati

We are heartbroken to share that Bahati, the little rhino calf so many of you have been following, passed away on the night of 26 October.

Our rangers found Bahati when she was just five days old, and from that moment, everyone involved worked tirelessly to give her every possible chance. Our vets joined colleagues from Kenya Wildlife Service, Mt Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, and Northern Kenya Veterinary Services to care for her, and she underwent two surgeries, including a second procedure in July, to improve her health and quality of life.

In the months that followed, we saw encouraging signs. Her appetite returned, her strength grew, and her playful personality began to shine. Those moments brought so much joy to the people who cared for her each day.

Over the weekend, Bahati developed severe colic. Despite intensive, round-the-clock care from the MKWC vet team, she did not recover.

Bahati’s time with us was far too short, but she leaves behind lasting memories for everyone who looked after her. We are deeply grateful to the teams and partners who stood by her throughout and to all of you who followed her story.

Giving wildlife in trouble a second chance is what our rangers and vets are here for. Whatever the outcome, they will keep doing everything they can to protect our endangered wildlife, and Bahati showed us all what that determination looks like.
