The Organization 

Ol Pejeta Conservancy (“Ol Pejeta”) is home to a key-one population of the Critically Endangered eastern black rhino, and to the last two northern white rhinos in the world. It is the only place in  Kenya to see chimpanzees, in a sanctuary established to rehabilitate animals rescued from the  black market. It has some of the highest predator densities in Kenya, and still manages a very  successful livestock Programme. Ol Pejeta also seeks to support the people living around its  borders, to ensure wildlife conservation translates to better education, healthcare and  infrastructure for the next generation of wildlife guardians. 

We are seeking a high calibre, self-motivated and dedicated applicant to fill the position of  Clinical Officer.

Role Summary 

The Clinical Officer shall attend to staff in need of medical attention, maintain a high level of  health awareness on the conservancy and keep the management well appraised of the medical  situation of its workers and the necessary interventions required to control situations, ensure  efficient application of health and safety procedures and administration of staff medical schemes  for employees and their dependents in addition to the following duties and responsibilities. The  Clinical Officer shall also be responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all  employees, visitors, and stakeholders.  

The role holder will develop, implement, and monitor safety policies and procedures in  compliance with local and international occupational health and safety standards. This role is  critical in promoting a culture of safety, preventing workplace accidents, and ensuring the well being of all personnel within the conservancy. 

  1. Responsibilities:

Medical Care and Clinic Management: Attend to the medical needs of employees, including  diagnosing illnesses, injuries, and dispensing appropriate medication. Administer first aid and  refer patients to Hospital in line with established internal policies and processes. Ensure the  company clinic is well-organized, clean, and maintained to acceptable standards at all times.  Maintain accurate records of all medical cases, drugs supply and issuance, treatments and  referrals. 

Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports on sick  leave, medical expenses, and clinic activities. Maintain a database of sick sheets, medical bills, drugs issuance at the clinic. Keep detailed stock records of clinic drugs, monitor usage, and submit  monthly reports for supply versus issuance.  

Employee Health Programs: Conduct regular employee wellness programs. Organize annual  medical examinations for employees, follow up on results, and provide recommendations.  Health & Safety Coordination: Participate in health and safety risk assessments, identifying  potential risks to employee health and safety. Maintain accident and injury registers ensuring all  incidents are reported to the insurance. Handle work-related injury cases, including witness  statements, injury details, and follow-up with Insurance for Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA) claims.  Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and recommend preventive measures. Maintain accurate records of incidents and prepare reports for  management and regulatory authorities. 

Risk Assessment and Hazard Management: Conduct regular risk assessments and workplace  inspections to identify potential hazards. Recommend and implement corrective actions to mitigate  risks. 

Policy Development and Implementation: Develop, review, and update occupational safety and  health (OSH) policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with applicable laws and best  practice. Ensure the availability and proper use of PPE across all departments, Monitor and  enforce the correct use of PPE by staff and contractors. 

Training and Awareness: Organize and conduct OSH training programs across the  Conservancy. Promote a culture of safety through awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and safety  drills. Organize and conduct health education sessions, organize mobile clinics and other health  initiatives. Drive initiatives aimed at promoting a culture of health and safety within the workplace.  

Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with all relevant OSH legislation, regulations, and  standards. Prepare and submit regular OSH reports to management and regulatory bodies. 

Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain emergency response plans, including  evacuation procedures and first aid protocols. Coordinate regular emergency drills and ensure all  staff are familiar with emergency procedures. 

Employee Support and Advisory Role: Advise management on employees who may need to be  retired on medical grounds. Notify HR and relevant HODs of hospitalizations and ensure NHIF  records are updated for employees and dependents. Attend Gender and Health & Safety  Committee meetings, providing recommendations and follow-up actions. 

Any other additional duties as maybe assigned from time to time. 

  1. Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

(a) Qualification 

Diploma in Clinical Medicine or related medical training school certificate 

Registered and licensed by the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya. 

Professional certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA) would  be an added advantage. 

A valid driving license would be desirable. 

(b) Experience 

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a corporate,  conservation, NGO or industrial setting. 

Experience in occupational health and safety management. 

(c) Skills 

Strong knowledge of Kenyan OSH legislation and international standards.  

Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and audits.  

Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.  

Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. 

Familiarity with the conservation and nonprofit sectors would be an added advantage. Detail oriented with excellent organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills Ability to thrive in a high paced, fast turnaround business  

Adaptable – ability to respond quickly to a shifting reality and adjust initiatives and priorities  accordingly 

Great interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
