Northern White Rhinos Come Home
TRAINING PADDOCK
The month of January 2010 was given to train the animals on their new boundaries. Each rhino was given access to the 400m x 400m fenced area – a milestone in acclimatizing them properly to the wild. Daily outings to this area will build their confidence for when they are finally released into the larger breeding area.
Having never encountered electric fences before, the animals had to learn to respect it, as it is there to surround them and keep them safe – this was a slow but essential process. Sadly, each animal was shocked a few times before they realized their new boundaries, running back to the security of their bomas. After this continual exposure to the fence, made more visual with tape, the animals were ready to be released into a larger area, slowly introducing them to their new home step by step
