The Earthwatch Institute runs the “Exploring lions” project that aims understanding the interactions between lions and the many species of ungulates (hoofed mammals) on which they feed.
The African lion population has declined by 30-50% in just over two decades largely due to habitat loss and conflict with humans. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN) now considers the African lion a vulnerable species. Understanding predator-prey dynamics will help conservationists positively influence their populations.
