I am pleased to announce that we have a new addition here at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Mwanzo is the proud mother of another baby girl! Her second child was no less of a surprise than her first born, Ajabu! This little bundle of joy is turning two months tomorrow as she was born on the 25th of April. In keeping with the theme of names beginning with “a” like her sister Ajabu, we named her Angela.

Angela is a testament to the quality care provided to all the chimpanzees here at the Sanctuary because despite Mwanzo breastfeeding she was still able to conceive due to the excellent diet she is on.  Angela is the fifth baby born in the Sanctuary since it first opened.

Mwanzo is very protective of her daughters but especially her newborn Angela and the other chimps are not allowed to touch her. Sometimes a group of female chimps gather around to have a look at the baby and Mwanzo will growl and chase them away. Ajabu is also very excited and does not seem very upset at not being the center of attention anymore. She is still very playful and I’m sure she will be a great big sister.
