Amisero the Mediator
Amisero, or Ami as we call her, is the highest-ranking female in her group. Though physical strength is much less of a factor in female chimpanzee hierarchy, I believe Ami’s strength contributes to her being the alpha female. As one of the biggest chimpanzees in the Sanctuary weighing close to 76 kilos, Ami is not one to push around!
Despite her strength, Ami is a great leader who doesn’t use her power to mistreat the other chimpanzees. In fact, she is a mediator in most conflict situations. She once stopped a fight between Chippie and Naika without using any violence. Chippie and Naika were screaming at each other, close to exchanging blows over an orange when Ami calmly walked over to them and started grooming. This gentle act indicated that the fight was over. Chippie and Naika, following Ami’s example, started grooming each other, friends again.
Sometimes Ami’s strength can lead to funny situations like when she saw a banana at the exact moment Akela saw it. The banana was near a water trough and as they both dashed to get it, Ami - as if flicking off a fly - pushed Akela into the trough. The look on Akela’s face was priceless! Ami, who looked stunned by her strength, helped Akela out of the trough and even offered the banana.

Angela and Ami
Jumbo everyone at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, I was at the Conservancy a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if little Angela is related to Ami. We saw her with her Mum and Grandma, I was just wondering if that was Ami. It was wonderful to see the family so close to us. The younger ones were playing and throwing Angela all over the place. The rougher they were the more she liked it. Helen.

Angela and Ami
Hello Helen, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary. Angela and Ami are not related in fact they are in different groups. Angela is in the old chimps ground while Ami is in the young chimps group. I hope you'll come visit us again soon.

Amizero
The really interesting thing is that "Ami" has always had these same qualities ever since she was a bald rescued baby chimp years ago in Burundi! . She wouldn't eat for a long time but when she started she never looked back!! She was the most generous , kind chimpanzee imagineable. When a baby gorilla joined the chimps at the "Halfway House" in Burundi she was the first, ( and only) one who offered the hand of friendship to this curious newcomer. Everyone that met Ami loved her. I will never forget her and it makes me so happy that she has grown into adulthood and is dong so well. I will try to send you some photos of her as a baby soon.
