Another award for the Ol Pejeta Conservancy!

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was among 11 African primate sanctuaries to be presented with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Education Award for 2008. The award honoured the Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Pan African Sanctuaries Alliance (PASA) for “Continuing the Legacy of Conservation Education in African Sanctuaries”. The award was presented to each of the 11 sanctuary members of PASA by world-renowned conservationist Dr. Richard Leakey at the PASA Annual Educators Workshop in Nairobi, which was organised by the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is a member of PASA, which works to support the conservation and care of African primates through its unique alliance of African sanctuaries. Dr. Leakey, who presided over the official opening of the one-week workshop on 2nd of March 09, congratulated all the sanctuaries that received the award, saying “…Sanctuaries are a small part of the bigger picture, that is, conservation in the wild. They are making a contribution to the future of great apes conservation in the wild through education and thus need a lot of public support…”. The workshop was attended by participants from Africa, America and Europe, and included a full day’s field visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
