Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary Hosts PASA Vets Workshop
The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) has just completed its annual Veterinary Healthcare Workshop, organised by Ol Pejeta’s Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The week-long conference brought together veterinary doctors working with PASA member sanctuaries across Africa
PASA sanctuaries have been created over the last three decades to accommodate the staggering numbers of chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and other endangered primates orphaned as a result of the depletion of their habitat (tropical rainforest) and the bushmeat trade
Founded in 2000, PASA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening, supporting and advancing the work of these primate sanctuaries across Africa. PASA uses annual workshops to promote cooperation and mutual respect among its members, while working to raise standards at member sanctuaries to the highest level.
One of the highlights of the workshop was a two-day field visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (SCS), a member of PASA and the only sanctuary for chimpanzees in Kenya. The main activities of the field visit included presentations of two case studies by the SCS, featuring practical sessions, as well as in-depth discussions on the care levels required to care for sanctuary chimpanzees.
Led by PASA Executive Director Doug Cress, the delegates congratulated SCS manager Martin Mulama and consulting SCS vet Nonee Magre for exemplary organisation of the workshop.
