Ol Pejeta Conservancy Takes Action to Help Fellow Kenyans
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy has been instrumental in the last few weeks, in assisting the Kenya Red Cross Society with its mission to provide basic necessities to thousands of displaced Kenyans.
Earlier this month, Ol Pejeta Conservancy provided a truck to deliver relief items donated by Nanyuki residents through The Kenya Red Cross Society’s, Laikipia Branch. The items were donated for displaced people currently seeking refuge at the Nakuru Showground following the conflict that has resulted from the recent general elections. The truck, which set off from Nanyuki for Nakuru, was loaded with 7 tons of various relief items including dry foods, clothing and bedding. Two police officers accompanied the truck for security. The Red Cross Laikipia Branch Chairman, Mr. Francis Wambua said one of their greatest challenges lies in the logistics of getting relief items delivered to the problem areas. He is therefore grateful for the assistance of organisations such as Ol Pejeta Conservancy that have stepped up to volunteer their services.
At the same time, staff members of Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Sweetwaters Tented Camp have made personal donations to assist displaced persons. The initiative was organized by Ol Pejeta’s Human Resources Manager and the General Manager of Sweetwater’s Tented Camp. The two managers, accompanied by a few other staff members went to present relief items worth Kshs 70,000 to the Red Cross Society office in Nanyuki last week. The Ol Pejeta staff were received at the Red Cross Society by the society’s volunteers and members. Timothy Nderitu, a university student who volunteers at the Red Cross during his vacations, said “It’s quite unfortunate that we have people who have no care for the welfare of others, but I must say I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Laikipia for their efforts to help the displaced persons…. We have been receiving on average a full lorry load of relief items per day, which we dispatch to Nakuru and Nyahururu.”
Ol Pejeta has invited the volunteers and members of Laikipia’s Red Cross branch, who have been working tirelessly since the start of 2008, to a free day on the conservancy to unwind and enjoy the beautiful things our country has to offer.
