The Ol Pejeta Conservancy Enters Exciting New Partnership with Serena Hotels

October 29, 2008

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Serena Hotels have signed a US$ 6 million agreement in which the hotel chain will lease a portion of the 90,000 acre Conservancy, in the Laikipia District, to construct an 18-room luxury tented camp worth US$ 4 million. Serena will continue to lease and manage the Conservancy’s famous Ol Pejeta House and will be spending US$ 2 million for its complete refurbishment. They will also continue with their management of the popular Sweetwaters Tented Camp also owned by the Conservancy.

The agreement was signed at the Nairobi Serena Hotel on Saturday October 25th by Ol Pejeta’s outgoing board chairman Mr. Giles Davies and Serena’s Managing Director Mr. Mahmud Jan Mohamed. It was witnessed by the Conservancy’s incoming chairman, Mr. Ali Kaka among other prominent persons from both sides. Mr. Mohamed said, “…this is a momentous occasion for both Serena Hotels and the Ol Pejeta Conservancy; by developing a new camp we will be able to attract more visitors to this spectacular private sanctuary…”

Serena Hotels are located in some of the most exotic locations throughout East Africa and Central Asia. They have been eco-tourism pioneers for many years and have initiated important environmental programmes to protect this stunning continent’s wildlife, communities and habitats.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, and home to 43 orphaned chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. It is also the closest place from Nairobi to see the Big 5.
