On Monday, December 21st, after travelling from the Czech Republic to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sudan – a 32 year old male northern white rhino – ate grass for the first time in over 30 years. It was an emotional time for all of us watching on the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Sudan, who was moved from Africa when he was about a year and a ½ old, had truly come home.
All four of the rhinos who were translocated from Dvur Kralove Zoo on the 19th of December, are doing well. Sudan, Suni, Najin and Fatu arrived on the Ol Pejeta Conservancy around 12:30 local time on 20th Dec, after having travelled by air and road. It was a long journey and we all waited anxiously for them to be offloaded.
Surrounded by a team of professionals, the crates were quickly taken off the trucks and all four animals were safely released into their new “bomas” within 3 hours.
The animals will be carefully monitored for a few weeks and kept within small enclosures for the first phase of the project, after which they will be given more room and eventually released to a larger area.
To keep up to date with the progress of the northern white rhinos, please visit our Ol Pejeta Facebook Fan Page, where we will keep posting regular updates and photos of the rhinos and their development.
