First One Million US Dollars for Community Development
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is situated within the Laikipia District and works to conserve wildlife and support local development. Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.
To support it’s wildlife conservation activities and with the help of various partners and well wishers, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy has raised and supervised the disbursement of over one million US dollars for community outreach programmes since the 2004.
These funds have been used to support various development projects within the community areas neighbouring Ol Pejeta.
Ol Pejeta’s Community Outreach Programme focuses on six areas:
1. Health services
2. Education services
3. Water infrastructure
4. Road infrastructure
5. Agricultural Extension and
6. Community-based ecotourism
Funds have been utilized to support the development of medical facilities within neighbouring communities and to purchase equipment and supplies for various health centres and the local district hospital. Our education programme focuses on the development of school infrastructure, and the purchase of text books, equipment, and school uniforms. Furthermore our bursary scheme for poor and disadvantaged students continues to grow, now sufficient to pay the annual fees for 45 secondary school students.
Communities have also been assisted to improve their access to safe water through repair and maintenance of dams and boreholes, the rehabilitation of abandoned water schemes and funding the procurement of rain water catchment tanks. In conjunction with local government, Ol Pejeta has also helped to re-surface a number of feeder roads in the surrounding areas.
An agricultural extension officer employed by the conservancy, working with Lengetia Limited, works to educate farmers about dry-land farming techniques and to introduce sustainable, efficient, appropriate and cost-effective drip irrigation techniques. The conservancy also works to assist local communities to develop profit-making eco-tourism based initiatives.
We are very proud of the last four years of achievements through our Community Outreach Programme. We intend to continue investing in the local communities at the same pace we have, and need your continued support.
